Roding Primary school fire: One of UK’s biggest primary schools engulfed in huge blaze
A huge blaze tore through one of the UK’s biggest primary schools a day before hundreds of students are due back, leaving the start of the autumn term in doubt. Twelve fire engines and about 80 firefighters battled the inferno that swept through about half of Roding Primary School in Dagenham, east London. It broke out just before 5am, destroying parts of the building and delaying pupils’ return. Crews removed a gas cylinder from the building and were cooling it down amid fears it could explode. People who live nearby were told to keep their windows and doors closed as smoke lingered in the air. An extension to the main building at the back of the grounds is reported to have been badly affected by the inferno.
What this means for schools
Schools should have a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment managed by the responsible person under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. It should cover the whole premises, including teaching areas, extensions, plant rooms and storage spaces, and be kept up to date. The assessment should be reviewed after building work, changes to use or occupancy, significant damage, or any other event that may affect fire safety. Actions identified should be recorded, prioritised and completed.
Fire detection and alarm systems should be tested and maintained, with faults dealt with promptly. Escape routes and exits must be kept clear, adequately signed and available for everyone who may use the building. Fire doors should close properly and not be wedged open, while combustible materials and gas cylinders should be stored and managed safely. Staff need suitable fire safety information and training, including evacuation procedures, arrangements for pupils and visitors who may need assistance, and what to do if an alarm sounds. Emergency plans should be practised and updated when circumstances change.
